NORRISTOWN – After taking Game 1 of the three-game series on Friday afternoon at Chestnut Hill, the Mounties were denied by the Griffins in two games on Saturday.
Â
The first game started with Mansfield putting up a three-spot in the first inning.
Brady Mengel brought around
Brittain Shander on a double to center field for MU's first run.
Dom Lopez and
Camren Ney drove in the other two Mansfield runs of the inning, but Chestnut Hill was able to settle in after that.
Â
Tyler Guidos started for Mansfield and navigated a scoreless first inning. In the second inning, the Griffins chipped a run in off of a sacrifice fly to make it a 3-1 game.
Â
The Griffins scored four more runs in the third to take the lead. Eric Gilham, Luke LeBeau, Sam Barletta, Andrew Dietz, and Ameir Uzzell each provided Chestnut Hill hits and also scored runs. Gilham led the team with three hits while Dietz drove in two Griffin runs. This third inning offense proved to be the final runs either team scored for the first seven-inning game of the day.
Â
From there, despite eight hits on the day, Mansfield was held scoreless for the remaining six innings. Matthew Kress and Jerry Mangan split the workload from the mound for the win and save, respectively.
Â
Timmy Saar finished the game for Mansfield by working four scoreless innings. The freshman struck out two batters.
Â
GAME 2:
The Mounties and Griffins combined for nine errors in the second game on Saturday. It was Chestnut Hill who took advantage and jumped to an early 7-0 lead through the first inning.Â
Billy Gregory made his second start of the season. The defense behind the senior expedited the senior's exit, as just one of those runs was earned.
Â
Andrew Dietz pitched for Chestnut Hill, allowing just one hit over six innings. Jared Healey led the team with three hits and a run. Zach Szumigala went 2-for-2 with two runs, while Franklin Ramirez drove in three runs on two singles. In total, eight Griffins notched hits in the game.
Â
In the rallying effort,
Eric Senior drove in all three of Mansfield's runs on a double to right-center in the sixth inning, but it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit.
Â
Joseph DePerno,
Troy Thomas, and
Sean Heery filled the final 5+ innings from the bump. DePerno wrung up two Griffins, while Heery's impressive freshman debut continued into his third appearance with a strikeout. Â
Brittain Shander and
Eric Senior provided the only two Mansfield hits, while Guidos, Mengel, and
Josh Kulina scored the runs in the sixth inning.
The Mountaineers are on the road next at West Chester on Friday, but host the Golden Rams for their home opener on Saturday, March 23rd.Â
