KUTZTOWN –
Brittany Ryan made a game-high 11 saves to lead the tenth-ranked Mansfield University field hockey team into a first-half tie with third-ranked Kutztown University, but the Golden Bears scored two second-half goals to leave Andre Reed Stadium with a 2-0 PSAC quarterfinal victory on Tuesday night, Nov. 5.
Kutztown (13-5, 7-3 PSAC) fired off nine shots in the first half but could not find the scoreboard because of the standout play from Ryan. The senior keeper made a point-blank save in the 10
th minute on a penalty stroke by leaving her feet and extending her full body to send away a bullet heading into the upper-left 90 of the cage.
Rachel Dusman broke the scoreless tie in the 34
th minute with an unassisted goal and extended the lead to two in the 39
th minute off an assist from Olivia Blasone.
The Mounties' (12-7, 6-5 PSAC) held Kutztown to two shots in the second half and their best chance came in the 38
th minute when
Meghan Griffin fired a shot on goal but was denied by Golden Bear's keeper Kerri Hanshaw.
Saramae Radel,
Dana Evans and Griffin took a shot each for Mansfield.
The Mounties close out the 2019 season nationally ranked at No. 10, while winning the most games in a year since 2007. Mansfield will send a record five seniors (Ryan, Evans, Griffin,
Madison Wilinsky and
Larissa Motts) to the annual Victory Sports/NFHCA Division II Senior Game on Saturday, Nov. 23 in Millersville.
