Field Hockey Blanks St. Michael’s 2-0 in Season Opener

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Meghan Griffin and Emily Sadowski each scored goals and the Mountaineer defense led by Madison Wilinsky did not allow a shot as Mansfield blanked St. Michael's 2-0 in its season opener on Saturday at the Dora Metrelis Classic.

Mansfield (1-0, 0-0 PSAC) totaled four shots with three on goal in the first half, but was unable to put one in the cage as the game went into halftime in a scoreless tie.

Griffin opened the scoring in the 46th minute scoring the first goal of the season following a Mountaineer corner. Five minutes later Sadowski gave Mansfield a 2-0 advantage when she found the back of the cage following a scramble in front of goal.

The Mounties totaled nine shots with six going on goal in the game. Mansfield also held a 13-0 advantage in corners.

It marks back-to-back years that Mansfield has won its season opener and is the first win over St. Michael's (0-1, 0-0 NE-10) for head coach Brittany Hansrote in her fourth season.

The Mountaineers return to action on Sunday when they face host Southern Connecticut State at 1:30 p.m.
