Women's Soccer Challenged By #24 Seton Hill

MANSFIELD, PA – The Mansfield Mountaineers hosted the nationally-ranked Seton Hill Griffins on Saturday afternoon to kick-off the Light Up Mansfield Again (LUMA)/Salute The Troops weekend celebration. The #24 Griffins showed their offensive surge by finding the back of the net four times in the second half to come away with a 6-0 win.

In the third minute of action, Seton Hill tallied their first goal of the day. Italia Biondi intercepted a clearance attempt and turned to shoot while falling away. Her shot floated above the outstretched reach of Mansfield keeper Stephanie Moir to the left side of the net.

The Mountaineers brought about an attack with Eleni Gebbia helping to lead the charge in the 12th minute of play. She jumped and blocked a clearance attempt by Griffins keeper Jessica Neill, which kept the ball inside the Seton Hill zone for Mansfield. This set up an excellent shot by Breanna Murphy off a nice give-and-go down the right wing. Her attempt sailed just high, skimming the football field goal on its way over the net.

In the 23rd minute, Gebbia played a beautiful ball to herself flicking the ball forward and placing a shot on net. Jaiden Dialma then followed the play with a shot of her own but Neill made a diving play to block the effort and stop the threat.

Madison Schwerzler buried a shot on a rebound from the direct kick from deep inside the Mansfield zone. Coming from the left wing, the initial free kick was wide left and high but it was brought back since it was taken before the official's whistle was blown. On the redo, the ball was put in play right in front of the net where Biondi put a head on it. Her attempt bounced squarely off the crossbar. The redirected ball landed right at the foot of Schwezler. Even with all the chaos in front of the net, Schwezler kept her composure and gave the Griffins a 2-0 lead with her first goal of the season.

With 30 seconds left in the first half, the Mounties earned a free kick on Seton Hill's half of the field. Chelsea Thomas took the kick and her ball created a wonderful opportunity in front of the net. Neill came off the line and Alex Teeter beat her to the ball, but Neill was able to cut off her angle to make the save with time winding down.

For Mansfield, Stephanie Moir continued to show resilience in net with her fifth-straight five-save performance, however it was cut a bit short.  She made a wonderful play on a through ball with 34 minutes left in the second half. Seton Hill's Katie Kimmich got to the ball first but Moir laid out and blocked the shot. Minutes later, she was given a red card for a play inside the box; She ended the day with ten saves. Fellow freshman keeper Brianna Roys stepped in to take over in her first career appearance. She made her first career save with just over 27 minutes remaining as Biondi fired a shot on net from the right flank. She ended with six saves of her own.

Offensively, Thomas, Gebbia, Murphy, Dialma, Sierra Austin, and Teeter provided shots against the Griffins, and Mansfield created some great movement at times. However, Seton Hill was able to smother those attacks and prove their ranking to be true by dominating offensively, scoring six times on 49 shots, and not allowing a goal. The Griffins remain tied at the top of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Standings.

Mansfield takes on Clarion University in another home PSAC matchup next Sunday at 1:30pm.
