Mansfield Mourns the Passing of Hall of Famer Mike Drass

DOVER, Del. – Former Mansfield University football standout and 2010 Mansfield Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame inductee Mike Drass passed away on Monday at the age of 57.

The information on Drass' death was passed to the university by former Mountaineer head football coach Tom Elsasser who was informed by a staff member at Wesley College in Delaware. Drass has served as the head football coach at Wesley for the past 25 years.

"Shocked and saddened is just about all I can say," said Elsasser of his former assistant. "Mike Drass was special – a difference maker wherever he was. He was a great player, assistant coach, and friend at Mansfield before becoming one of the top NCAA Division III coaches in the division's history at Wesley. We are all shocked and thinking of his wife and family."

Drass left Mansfield to take over the head coaching spot at Wesley in Dover, Del. and turned the program into one of the most successful in the nation. In 25 years as the head mentor, Drass sported a 229-61-1 overall record with appearances in the NCAA playoffs in each of the past 14 years. His team finished 10-2 this past season and advanced to the second-round of the NCAA Division III playoffs.

Visitation will take place Saturday from 11-1 p.m. at the Torbert Funeral Home at 1145 East Lebanon Road in Dover. A public service will then be held at Mike Drass Field at Scott D. Miller Stadium at 2 p.m. Saturday, with a reception to follow at the Dulany Dining Hall on Wesley's main campus.
