BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Mansfield softball rallied late in both games to take home two victories over Bloomsburg for the first time in program history on Sunday afternoon.
The Mountaineers took the first game 4-3 before scoring four runs in the final inning to secure the 6-4 victory in game two.
In the top of the third of game one,
Joelle Snyder worked her way around the bases before
Rachael Sterner's sacrifice fly drove her in to score for Mansfield (5-4, 3-1 PSAC).
Bloomsburg
(11-14, 3-5 PSAC C) got to work early plating two runners in their half of the first inning. The Huskies would score another run in the fourth but neither team would reach home again until the final inning.
With two outs,
Koryn Wickwire and
Alli McGovern hit back-to-back singles in the seventh while Sterner walked to put the two in scoring position. In a final effort, Pearce plated all three with a double to left center pushing the Mountaineers past Bloomsburg 4-3.
The Huskies' final attempt was not enough as Mansfield took the 4-3 win in game one.
Arianna Young earned the complete game-victory with Alyssa Davies taking the loss.
Wickwire and
Leah McGovern each went 2-for-3 at bat while Pearce led with a double and three RBIs.
Game two began with a blank inning before Mansfield was first on the scoreboard on their way to outhitting the Huskies.
Pearce and
Anastasia Hester were each walked to put the Mounties in scoring position. Both would advance on a sacrifice bunt from
Leah McGovern before Pearce came home giving
Melanie Taylor the RBI.
Alli McGovern put another run on the board in the next inning when Sterner doubled to right center.
After two scoreless innings, Bloomsburg responded with a hit parade in the fifth frame. The Huskies scored three runs on four consecutive hits to jump out to a 4-2 lead.
The Mountaineers refused to go out without a fight plating four in a productive final inning. Snyder and
Deshae Jones were each given free bases before Wickwire singled to send Jones home. A sacrifice bunt from
Alli McGovern advanced the two on base to set Sterner up for a two RBI double through the center. Hester built on the momentum with a single to center allowing pinch runner
Alex Hein to score an insurance run at 6-4.
Sterner led offensively with two doubles in four at-bats and three RBIs. The senior totaled 10 putouts at first. WIckwire and Snyder also had two hits.
Sierra Storm scattered six hits over seven innings of work for her third win of the season. Abby Wild was dealt the loss.
Mansfield returns home to host IUP tomorrow in a doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m.
