MANSFIELD – Mansfield fell twice at the hands of Indiana (Pa.) 2-1 in the opener and 14-2 in the nightcap of a PSAC Central doubleheader on Friday at Lutes Field.
Game one was a classic pitcher's duel that ultimately fell in favor of IUP.
The Crimson Hawks (23-16, 12-6 PSAC Central) got on the board first against Mansfield ace
Arianna Young in the top of the third with an RBI single to gain a 1-0 lead.
The Mounties (21-14, 9-9 PSAC Central) would strike back in the bottom half of the inning when a pair of errors by IUP allowed
Koryn Wickwire to come around and score. Wickwire was three-for-three with a pair of doubles in game one.
IUP would take back the lead in the top half of the sixth with an RBI single to take a 2-1 advantage, this would ultimately prove to be the difference maker as Mansfield would go quietly the rest of the way.
It was a strong outing for Young who went seven innings, allowing two runs and striking out four in the losing effort. Lauren Zola would get the win for IUP allowing one run over seven innings of work.
In game two, the scoring started early and often for the Hawks, as they would tack on 14 runs through six innings.
Mansfield got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Rachael Sterner hit her sixth homerun of the year.
Deshae Jones would score on an IUP error, but that would be all for the Mansfield as IUP wrapped up the series sweep with a 14-2 victory.
Wickwire lead the Mounties offensively going five for six on the day.
The Mounties travel to Clarion Saturday to conclude the regular season.
