MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Mansfield cruised past Mount Saint Vincent 12-2 before
Laura Lawson drove in the eventual game-winning run in a 2-1 final over Gettysburg to sweep a St. Patrick's Day doubleheader on Friday and conclude the spring break trip.
Against Mount Saint Vincent (5-4),
Koryn Wickwire tripled in the first inning to score
Alli McGovern before crossing the plate herself on a passed ball.
The Dolphins scored a run in the top of the second before Mansfield (10-5) exploded for five runs in the bottom of the frame to lead 7-1. A McGovern walk plated a run then
Kayla Hahn and
Leah McGovern scored on passed balls. Wickwire drove in a run with a sac fly before
Rachael Sterner singled in another.
In the third, Mansfield hung five more runs beginning with RBIs from
Anastasia Hester,
Alli McGovern and Lawson. McGovern scored on an error then
Melanie Taylor plated a run to push the Mountaineer lead to 12-1.
The Dolphins added another run in the fourth, but could not avoid the mercy rule.
Arianna Young moved to 7-2 on the season, allowing nine hits with two earned runs and a strikeout.
In the nightcap, both sides were only able to get one hit each through the first three innings of a pitcher's duel. Mansfield broke up the scoreless tie in the top of the fourth when Lawson and Sterner both doubled to give the Mounties a 1-0 lead.
A Gettysburg (8-4) RBI double in the bottom of the inning locked the game back up at 1-1.
In the top of the fifth,
Deshae Jones and Hester got aboard with two-out singles before Lawson drove in the eventual game-winning run with a single to left field.
The Bullets put runners on in each of the final three innings but could not bring any home.
Sierra Storm got the complete game win in the circle, allowing just six hits over 7.0 innings with four strikeouts.
Mansfield is back in action on March 28 with a non-conference doubleheader at Goldey-Beacom.
