Early Lead Slips Away in Loss at Penn in Season Finale

PHILADELPHIA – Mansfield jumped out to an early 13-0 lead, but defending CSFL Champion Penn scored 35 straight points to claim a 35-13 victory in the season finale at Franklin Field.

On the opening drive, Nick Cherasaro hooked up with Jakob Woods for a 62-yard reception then David Butler used a 14-yard rush down to the Penn (6-1, 4-0 CSFL South) 1-yard line. Cherasaro capped the drive with a quarterback keeper into the endzone to put Mansfield (1-6, 1-3 CSFL South) on top 7-0.

Penn took the ensuing kick-off and drove the ball into the redzone before the Mountaineers' Kane Kania came up with a huge stop on fourth-and-one to force a turnover on downs. Mansfield's drive stalled, but the Mountie defense came up big again with Josh Friebis forcing a fumble to set up the offense in Penn territory.

Mansfield used seven plays capped by a 7-yard Cherasaro pass to Woods to give the Mounties a two-score advantage at 13-0.

The Quakers got one back before the end of the first quarter with Jack Klaus rushing for six yards to cut the Mansfield lead to 13-6. Penn went on to score 35 unanswered points to claim a perfect 4-0 record in the CSFL South Division.

Cherasaro went 14-26 for 190 yards and a touchdown. Woods hauled in seven passes for 117 yards and a score with D.J. McLean catching four passes for 47 yards. David Butler led the Mansfield rush attack with 12 rushes for 86 yards and Jon Brown had 13 rushes for 51 yards.

Friebis totaled 10 tackles, including nine solo efforts and three tackles for loss, to lead the Mansfield defense. Kania posted eight tackles with Nic Anastasi recording seven. Hunter Nause had three tackles with a forced fumble and an interception.

Penn quarterback Joshua Trybus passed for 169 yards and two touchdowns with running back Klaus going for 119 yards on the ground and two scores.
