Early Lead Slips Away in Loss to Chestnut Hill

MANSFIELD – Mansfield was first to get on the board with a 59-yard touchdown pass from Adam Hutchison to Jeff Bagwell, but Chestnut Hill would come away with the 30-18 win on Saturday for the Josh Palmer Pigskin Classic.

On the second play of Mansfield's first possession, Hutchison aired it out to Bagwell for a long touchdown pass to give the Mounties an early lead. It marked the second pass of 50+ yards for the Mountaineers this season. The extra point attempt was blocked.

On their ensuing possession, Chestnut Hill (1-2, 1-2 CSFL South) answered with a grinding eight-play drive capped by Sef Penson's 12-yard touchdown run to make it 7-6 Griffins. Penson carried on every play of the drive.

In the second quarter, Penson found pay dirt again along with Dasantae Callis to extend the Chestnut Hill lead to 21-6. The score would stand until halftime.

After the Griffins third-quarter opening drive stalled, D.J. McLean fielded a short punt for 22 yards down to the Chestnut Hill 20. Three plays later, Hutchison found McLean in the endzone for a 19-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 21-12. The Mansfield (0-4, 0-2 CSFL South) two-point conversion attempt failed.

In the fourth quarter, a bad snap in the shadow of the endzone led to a Mountie safety before Chestnut Hill scored again on an 11-yard touchdown pass from Michael Marino to Domoree Hill to extend the lead to 30-12.

Nick Cherasro would lead Mansfield on a 14-play, 75-yard drive that ended with him connecting with Chad Steinmetz to bring the game within two scores at 30-18. However, the comeback would not be in the cards for the Mountaineers.

Chestnut Hill totaled 317 yards of total offense in the game to Mansfield's 273. The Griffins won the rushing battle 165-10 with the Mounties leading the passing game 263-152.

Hutchison was 9-24 for 140 yards and two touchdowns with Cherasaro going 11-17 for 123 yards and one touchdown. McLean caught 10 passes for 127 yards and a score.

Marino went 8-11 with 152 yards and touchdown for the Griffins. Reginald Robinson Jr. hauled in three passes for 71 yards. Penson ended the day with 24 rushes for 96 yards and two touchdowns.

Josh Friebis led the Mountaineer defense in tackles again this week with 12 total including seven solo. Kana'i Keys totaled nine tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss with Kane Kania recording eight tackles.

Incredibly, Dylan Flexer recorded two sacks for the third straight game to go along with six total tackles. Flexer moves up to third on the season record list for sacks with 6.0. Doug Bird also recorded a sack in the game.

Mansfield travels to CSFL newcomer Caldwell next week.
