Mounties Split On Opening Day Behind Sterner and Inman

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mounties Split On Opening Day Behind Sterner and Inman

MYRTLE BEACH, SC – Rachael Sterner went 3-3 with two RBI's and Ashley Inman tossed a complete-game two-hitter to lead Mansfield to a 5-1 come-from-behind win over West Liberty (WV) in the Mountaineers 2016 season opener Friday in Myrtle Beach, SC.

Sterner also hit a home run in the second game of the day but Mansfield dropped a 10-5 decision to Le Moyne.

In the opener, West Liberty took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the bottom of the third inning.

Mansfield rallied with four runs in the top of the sixth inning when Laura Lawson led off with a double and later scored on a single by Sterner. Megan Miller doubled down the line to drive in Sterner with Amanda Goodwin doubling to plate Miller. Casey Pearce then singled to left field to drive in Goodwin.

The Mountaineers added another run in the seventh when Lawson led off with a single and advanced to second on a single by Kayla Hahn. Lawson later scored on a single to right by Sterner.

Inman was outstanding allowing West Liberty just a single in the third and a double in the fourth inning. She struck out nine while walking three.

Sterner went 3-3 with a double and two RBI's with Lawson going 2-4.

In game two, Le Moyne got two runs in the top of the first inning off freshman starter Brooke Roys. Mansfield scored an unearned run in the bottom of the second to close to 2-1.

Le Moyne got an unearned run in the top of the third before Sterner belted a solo home run over the center field fence to make it a 3-2 game after three innings.

The score remained that way until the top of the fifth when Le Moyne pushed six runs across the plate with three of them scoring on a triple by Sabrina Riley.

Mansfield countered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run double by Hahn.

Both teams added a run in the sixth with Lawson singling in Koryn Wickwire who had doubled earlier in the inning.

Hahn led the Mountaineers offense going 2-4 with a double and two RBI's. Roys took the loss.

Riley went 3-4 with three RBI's for Le Moyne with Alexis Eastman going the distance to get the win.
