MANSFIELD – Mansfield keeper
Laura Lawson had an incredible 24-save performance, but a late Millersville goal allowed the nationally-ranked Marauders to escape with a 1-0 PSAC victory on Senior Day in the season finale at Van Norman Field.
Â
Prior to the game seniors Lawson,
Emily Willard,
Claire Swink along with sophomore
Tatum Albertson were honored as part of Mansfield's Senior Day celebration.
Â
Lawson, in her final appearance at Van Norman Field, led a gutsy effort by the Mountaineer defense which thwarted all 23 of Millersville's (14-4, 7-3 PSAC) penalty corner attempts in the game. Lawson's biggest save of the game came early in the second half when she denied Margaret Thorwart's penalty stroke attempt to keep the game scoreless and shift momentum to the Mounties.
Â
Lawson finishes her career at Mansfield ranking third in program saves with 609 over her four seasons.
Â
Junior
Emily Blidy got in on the action as well, recording her third defensive save of the season.
Â
The Mounties kept the 2014 National Champions off the board for the first 63 minutes of the game until Thorwart tapped in the game-winner late.
Â
Katie Jamison recorded three of the Mountaineers' six shots of the game with the majority of those shots being blocked just short of goal by the Millersville defense.
Â
The Marauders totaled 31 shots with 22 coming in the second half. Thorwart put a game-high six shots on goal including the game winner.
