FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Meadows Ties Single-Season Scoring Record in 1-1 Draw with Seton Hill
MANSFIELD – Freshman phenom
Delaney Meadows tied the Mansfield University single-season scoring record as Mountaineer women's soccer came away with a 1-1 double-overtime draw against Seton Hill Friday afternoon in PSAC action.
It was Meadows who opened the scoring in the 34
th minute, when she took advantage of a defensive miscue and then dribbled past the keeper and shot for goal to give Mansfield the 1-0 advantage. The goal marked the ninth of the season from the red-hot rookie who ties Lyndi Keiser (2005) for the MU single-season record.
Meadows currently leads the PSAC in goals (9), goals per game (1.125), points (2.38) and points per game (2.38). She is second in NCAA Division II in goals per game and is tied for 11
th in total goals.
The lead would be short lived however, as Seton Hill's Emma Bearinger scored the equalizer on an Emily LoPresti pass in the 38
th minute.
Mansfield's offense generated several great scoring opportunities in the second half as the Mountaineers totaled nine shots with five shots on goal and also totaled three corner kicks.
A Griffin foul late in regulation set-up a Mansfield free kick from 25 yards out, but
Karyn Anselmo's kick just sailed wide of the left post.
In the first overtime period, Mansfield's
Danielle Lentz put a shot on goal, but Seton Hill controlled much of the possession totaling seven shots and two corners.
Mansfield's defense allowed the Griffins to get off just one shot in the second overtime period while the Mountaineer offense recorded four shots with two going on goal. Lentz was set-up perfectly for a header that just went to the right of the post before Meadows had a breakaway opportunity that was denied by the SHU keeper.
Seton Hill totaled 40 shots in the game, but was not very efficient as constant pressure from Mansfield's defense allowed just 11 shots to go on goal (27.5 SOG%). Meanwhile, Mansfield totaled 17 shots with eight on goal (47.0 SOG%).
Meadows totaled six shots with three on goal while Lentz totaled three with one on goal.
Rachel Fox had another great outing, making 10 saves in 110 minutes between the sticks.
Mansfield hosts Clarion on Saturday at 12:30.
