Chapman Scores 10th Career Goal but Late Mercyhurst Goal Sinks MountiesMANSFIELD – Mansfield senior
Kelsey Chapman scored her 10th career goal to tie the game early in the second half but Mercyhurst got a late goal from Carly Zimmerman to pull out a 2-1 win in a PSAC matchup Saturday afternoon.
The teams battled through a well-played first half to a scoreless tie at halftime.
Chapman had two shots on goal during the first half but was denied each time while Mountaineer goalie
Rachel Fox stopped both shots she faced.
Nine minutes into the second half, Mercyhurst's Nicole McAlpin broke away from the Mountaineer defense going on a long run before hitting a shot from 15 yards out for the first score of the game.
Mansfield answered right back, adding a goal four minutes later with Chapman popped the ball up and over the goalie off a free kick from
Karyn Anselmo and assisted by
Chelsea Hough.
Mercyhurst brought great pressure just minutes later, putting a shot of the post followed by two more on goal over a 10 second span that were rejected by Fox.
The Lakers put another flurry together starting with a shot on goal by Kristina Roberti in the 73rd minute that was stopped by Fox. Fox picked up another save a minute later before Zimmerman got free and outraced the defense. She squeezed a 20-footer past a diving Fox for what would prove to be the game winner in the 80th minute.
Mansfield had two good chance to tie the score late in the game. Anselmo's header with three minutes remaining went just high while
Nikki Ortiz shot of goal with 100 second remaining was stopped by goalie Ellie McDougall.
Mercyhurst was awarded 12 corners to Mansfield's one and the Lakers had nine shots on goal to Mansfield's six.
Fox was credited with seven saves while McDougall had five stops for Mercyhurst.
Chapman's goal was her third of the season and 10th of her career tying Jamie Heller (2002-03) for 4th on the school's career goal list.
Mansfield travels to Kutztown on Wednesday.
