Penn rallies in final minutes to edge Mansfield 14-13 in Josh Palmer Pigskin ClassicMANSFIELD – Mike Beamish scored two touchdowns in the final eight minutes of the game to lift the University of Pennsylvania to a 14-13 come-from-behind win over Masnfield in the opening game of the season for both teams.
The game was just the third night game in Mansfield history and drew a crowd of 4,127 fans. Mansfield hosted the world's first night footbal game in 1892.
"It was a heck of an effort and a heck of a game,"said head coach Grahman Johnsen. "We just couldn't seem to get a break over the final 10 minutes of the game but we showed a lot of good things out there tonight to a lot of people. We make some minor adjustments and we're going to get better.".
Mansfield's
Kurt Logan took the game's opening kickoff and returned it 84-yards for a touchdown giving Mansfield a 7-0 lead just 13 seconds into the game.
It looked like Mansfield would extend its lead early in the second quarter after driving 99-yards from their 1-yard line to the Penn 1-yard line before a fumble in the endzone negated the drive.
Mansfield increased its advantage to 13-0 on a one-yard run by
Trelijah Miller with just over four minutes into the third quarter with the extra-point kick going wide left.
Penn finally got on the scoreboard midway through the four quarter when Beamish capped off a 97-yard drive with a 5-yard run to close the gap to 13-7.
After stopping Mansfield, Penn started from deep in its own territory, driving 73 yards to score what proved to be the winning touchdown on a 1-yard run by Beamish with 1:42 to play.
Mansfield attempted one last comeback, driving to the Penn 42 before time ran out.
Senior quarterback
Mike Maniscalco led the Mountaineers offensively, completing 14-of-24 passes for 23 yards.
Joe Bucek set a mansfield sprint football record for receiving yards in a game with 117 yards on six catches.
Jeremy Estremera had three catches for 46 yards.
Trelijah Miller ran for 80-yards and a touchdown on 22 carries.
For Penn, Beamish picked up 125 yard rushing with quarterback Mike McCurdy completing 20-of-33 passes for 190 yards. He was intercepted twice.
Penn held a slight 313-300 advantage in total yardage.
Senior defensive linemen
Anthony Mazzone had a game-high nine tackles including a sack and two tackles for a loss.
Dylan Flexer added seven stops while
Kyle Post and
Spencer Underdown each had interceptions.
Mansfield hosts Navy on Saturday for Homecoming.
