Anselmo's 30-Yard Boot with 89 Seconds Left Lifts Mansfield Past DaemenAMHERST, NY –
Karyn Anselmo drilled a 30-yard kick over the hands of the goalie to lift Mansfield to a dramatic 2-1 win at Daemen in a non-conference game Tuesday night.
Anselmo's game-winning kick came with just 89 seconds remaining in regulation and 12 minutes after Daemen had rallied to tie the game at 1-1.
Although the score was deadlocked at 0-0 at halftime, Mansfield carried much of the action early taking the first five shots of the night including a pair on goal by
Brielle Filtch and one by
Danielle Lentz in the first 14 minutes of the game.
Mansfield goalie
Alana Greenawalt kept the game scoreless with a brilliant effort when Daemen got off three shots on goal over a 16 seconds stretch just before the first half ended.
Filtch, who had a game-best four shots on goal, finally managed to get one by goalie Juli Prentice in the 51st minute carrying the ball to the top of the box and putting the shot high and off the keepers hands into the net for a 1-0 Mansfield lead.
Mansfield still seemed in control as the game approached the 70th minute before Daemen's Rachael Banasik nailed a low shot inside the near post to knot the game at 1-1 in the 76th minute.
Daemen continued to pressure the goal getting shots on goal in the 77th and 86th minute before Anselmo connected on her winning kick.
Daemen didn't give up however and with Ashley Griffin getting off a shot that went wide with 45 seconds to go.
Greenawalt had another strong game in goal for the Mountaineers with six saves.
With the win, Mansfield is now 1-1-1 over the last three games.
The travel-weary Mountaineers, who have been on the road for five of the last six games, travel to Edinboro this Saturday.
