FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mountaineers Down Clarion 2-1
MANSFIELD –
Danielle Lentz and
Karyn Anselmo each scored goals in the second half to push Mansfield past Clarion 2-1 in PSAC women's soccer action Saturday afternoon.
The Mounties are unbeaten in their last four outings and have won three of their last four conference games. Mansfield (3-4-1, 3-4-1 PSAC) is currently tied for ninth in the PSAC with 10 points.
The Mountaineer offense put the pressure on early with two shots on goal and a ball that was denied by the crossbar in the opening five minutes. Mansfield opened the game with six straight shots before Clarion (3-3-2, 3-3-2 PSAC) recorded its first shot in the 10
th minute.
Mansfield held a 13-9 shots and 2-1 corner kick advantage in the first half, but neither team was able to score.
Lentz put the Mountaineers on top 1-0 just two minutes into the second half after dribbling an Anselmo through ball into the box and finding the back of the net from eight yards out. The goal was Lentz's second of the season.
Lentz continued to create scoring opportunities following her goal, as the freshman hit the post and crossbar and put a shot on goal.
In the 67
th minute, Anselmo gave the Mountaineers a 2-0 lead on a successful penalty kick attempt. Anselmo is 2-2 on PK attempts this season.
Clarion answered back just two minutes after the Mounties goal when Casey Harsch played a free kick from 35 yards out past the keeper to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Mountaineer defense held strong over the final 20 minute of the game to earn the conference victory.
Sarah Nezelek earned the victory in her first appearance in goal for the Mountaineers. The freshman was credited with three saves in the game.
Jessica Kerwin recorded two shots on goal while
Kelsey Chapman,
Lauren Boess and
Danelle Shelters each put a shot on goal each.
Mansfield outshot Clarion 29-15 while putting 14 shots on goal. The Mounties held a 3-1 advantage on corner kicks.
The Mountaineers are back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 2 when they host Lock Haven at 4 p.m.
