FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Shelters' Goal Lifts Mansfield Past Pitt-Johnstown 1-0
JOHNSTOWN –
Danelle Shelters' scored the game's only goal to lift visiting Mansfield past conference newcomer Pitt-Johnstown Wednesday afternoon in PSAC women's soccer action.
The victory was the first for the Mountaineers who opened the season against a tough slate of competition.
Mansfield (1-4, 1-4 PSAC) dominated much of the offensive possession, totaling 20 shots in the game with five going on goal. It marks the most shots recorded in a game for the Mounties since finishing with 23 against Edinboro on Nov. 27, 2012.
The Mountaineer defense limited Pitt-Johnstown (0-5, 0-5 PSAC) to just seven total shots with four going on goal.
Shelters found the back of the net in the 32
nd minute after finishing a
Kelsey Chapman cross into the box. It marks the first goal of the season for the Junior College transfer from Jamestown C.C.
Chapman and
Lauren Boess each had four shots in the game with one going on goal. Defenders
Kelly Howiszak and
Sara Weaver also recorded shots on goal in the win.
Mountaineer keeper Alana Krieger made four saves in goal to preserve the shutout. It was the first career shutout for the junior goal keeper.
Jackie Becerra led Pitt-Johnstown offensively totaling four shots with two on goal.
The Mountaineers are back in action on Saturday, Sept. 21 when they host Seton Hill at 1:30 p.m.
