FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mansfield Falls to Shippensburg in Tough 1-0 Battle
MANSFIELD – The Mountaineers controlled the tempo for much of the game, but a late goal by Shippensburg was enough to give the Raiders a 1-0 victory Tuesday afternoon in PSAC women's soccer action.
Mansfield opened the game with a
Kelsey Chapman shot and
Danielle Murray header that both went on goal but were saved by the Shippensburg keeper. The Mountaineers totaled five shots in the first half, but were unable to find the back of the net.
In the second half, both teams traded shots but neither was able to score until Kate Zech notched the first and only goal of the game from 18 yards out in the 76
th minute. The goal was Zech's first of the season.
Mansfield had an opportunity in the waning seconds of the game with a corner kick with 13 seconds left to play. Senior
Jessica Kerwin took a hurried shot as time expired, but it sailed wide right.
Mountie keeper Alana Krieger was credited with four saves in the game while preventing several Ship goal-scoring opportunities by coming off her line.
Shippensburg held a slight 13-12 advantage on total shots with each team putting four shots on goal.
The Mountaineers are back in action on Saturday, Sept. 14 when they travel to Millersville for PSAC play.
