Soccer Holds No. 9 Cal in Check Before Falling

Box Score

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Number 9 Cal Scores four times in final 13 minutes to pull away from Mansfield

MANSFIELD – After a spectacular effort over the first 77 minutes, a worn-down Mansfield squad give up four goals over the final 13 minutes of the game in dropping a 5-0 decision at nationally-ranked California in PSAC women's soccer action Wednesday afternoon.

California, currently in first place in the PSAC and ranked No. 9 nationally in NCAA Division II, scored the game's first goal when Haley Henderson scored from inside the box off assists from Erin Hogan Danielle Kearns in the 28th minute.

Using strong play from its defense, the Mountaineers kept the Vulcans off the scoreboard for the remainder of the first half half.

Mansfield had its best scoring chance early in the second half with Jessica Kerwin's shot was stopped by Meghan Jayes in the 58th minute.

But the injury-riddled Mountaineers - Mansfield used just four subs during the game – finally tired and California (10-2-1, 10-1-0) took full advantage scoring four goals over the game's final 13 minutes.

Alana Krieger was credited with four saves for the Mountaineers.

Mansfield falls to 4-8-1 overall and 3-8-1 in PSAC play.
