MANSFIELD – Junior Jessica Kerwin scored her first collegiate goal as Mansfield and East Stroudsburg battled to a 1-1 tie in a well-played and emotional PSAC opener Wednesday afternoon.

Prior to the start of the game, Kaitlyn “Mic” McBride's jersey was hung above the field in a ceremony featuring the Mountaineer women's soccer team and the McBride family. McBride, who would have been playing in her senior season, passed away in June.

“It was a great team effort on a very emotional day,” said head coach Tim Dempsey. “Mic would have been proud of how her teammates played.”

Coming off the emotional ceremony, Mansfield carried play early in the game with Kerwin taking a ball from freshman Kelsey Chapman in a scrum in front of the ESU goal and putting it past the goalie in the 34th minute.

East Stroudsburg (1-0-2) answered a little over seven minutes later on a header by Carly Collins off a corner kick by Marissa Spitler.

Although East Stroudsburg held a 14-5 advantage on shots on goal, Mansfield had two excellent scoring opportunities late in the second with half with senior Erika Moyer going one-on-one on brake-aways with ESU goalie Brittain Wagner who turned away two point-blank shots.

East Stroudsburg controlled play through the first overtime period with Mansfield goalie Alexis Wilhelm recording five saves over that span including two in the final two minutes.

Wilhelm recorded 13 saves in the game with ESU goalie Brittain Wagner credited with four stops.

Mansfield (1-0-1) has a bye this weekend before traveling to Roberts Wesleyan for a non-conference game on Sept. 11.
