MANSFIELD – The Mansfield University women's soccer team held Clarion scoreless for the first 88 minutes of regulation, but the Golden Eagles walked away with a 2-1 victory after scoring two late goals.
The Mountaineers (1-5, 0-4 PSAC) struck first when
Erika Moyer placed a
Leah Fuerst pass past the Clarion (2-3-1, 0-3-1 PSAC) keeper in the 26th minute to take an early 1-0 lead.
Led by
Sara Weaver and
Amanda Quinn, the Mansfield Defense made it difficult for Clarion to get anything going offensively, holding the Eagles to just three shots in the first half. The Mountaineer offense kept the pressure on their opponents as well, recording seven shots in the half including four shots on goal.
The Mansfield defense continued to limit Clarion's opportunities in the second half of play, keeping the Eagles scoreless for the majority of the half. But in the 88th minute, Clarion's Bethany Naugle sent the game into overtime when she took an Alyssa Katz pass and placed it just inside the far post from 12 yards out.
Going into extra time, the Mountaineers hoped to recreate the thrilling overtime victory against Goldey-Beacom College in their season opener. But, an Autumn Rosenberg goal in the 3rd minute of overtime dashed Mansfield's hopes and gave Clarion the victory.
The Mansfield offense held an 11-10 shot advantage over Clarion at the end of regulation but couldn't find a spark in overtime.
Mansfield keeper
Alexis Wilhelm had three saves on the day.
With her goal in the first half, junior
Erika Moyer tied freshman
Renae Bowman for most goals on the season with three.
The Mountaineers are back in action on September 24th when they host Lock Haven University in a PSAC match-up. Game time is set for 1:30 p.m.
