Mansfield Drops Road Game at Mercyhurst

Boxscore

ERIE – Mountaineer goal keeper Alexis Wilhelm recorded a season high 14 saves, but the Mansfield University women's soccer team (1-3, 0-2 PSAC) fell on the road to Mercyhurst with a final score of 2-0.

Mercyhurst (3-1, 1-1 PSAC) struck early in the game when Sara Hawksworth placed a Kiley Cleveland pass into goal to go up 1-0 in the 4th minute.

Wilhelm and the Mountaineer defense rallied to prevent another Mercyhurst goal with strong play throughout the rest of the first half. Sophomores Leah Fuerst and Jessica Kerwin and freshman Erin Bishop all put shots on goal in the first half, but the Lakers' keeper prevented a Mountie goal and Mercyhurst went into halftime with a one goal lead.

In the second half, sophomore Lauren Boess was inches away from tying the game in the 55th minute when she played a header that beat the Mercyhurst keeper but hit crossbar.

Mercyhurst struck again in the 64th minute when Molly Marsh put the ball in goal on a free kick from 35 yards out.

Mansfield couldn't overcome the deficit and fell to Mercyhurst with a final score of 2-0.

Mercyhurst improves to 3-1 while Mansfield moves to 1-3. The Mounties will hit the road again when they face IUP in a PSAC match-up on Sept. 14th. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
