SHEPHERD, WV – The Mansfield University women's soccer team prevailed over host Shepherd University with a 2-1 non-conference road win Tuesday afternoon. The win ends a 13-game losing skid for the Mounties.
Mansfield (2-13-0) put their first goal on the board early when
Renae Bowman beat the Ram's keeper on an unassisted score in the 11
th minute. Bowman's goal is her fourth of the season, making the freshman the top scorer for the Mounties.
The Mountaineers kept the pressure on Shepherd (7-6-2) recording four shots in the half while only allowing two to the Rams.
In the 60
th minute, Shepherd's Chelsi Kling evened the game at one goal apiece after taking a Kelsey Propps pass and striking it in goal.
Junior
Leah Fuerst gave Mansfield the 2-1 lead fifteen minutes later placing the ball in the back of the net via a
Jessica Kerwin pass. The goal and assist are firsts on the year for both Fuerst and Kerwin.
The Mountaineer defense held strong, limiting the Rams scoring chances in the final fifteen minutes of the game to give Mansfield the 2-1 victory.
Junior keeper
Alexis Wilhelm totaled three saves on the day playing a full 90 minutes in goal while the Mountie defense allowed the Rams to get only four shots off in the game. Mansfield also held a 2-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The win snaps a thirteen-game losing streak for the Mounties who've had several close calls during their drought in the powerful Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. Throughout the streak, Mansfield has lost six games by just one goal including an overtime loss to Clarion.
The Mountaineers travel back to Mansfield for a two-game home stand to round out the season. Mansfield hosts Lock Haven Thursday, Oct. 27
th before facing off against Kutztown on Saturday, Oct. 29
th in the Mounties' senior day. Both games will be played at Mansfield's downtown Smyth Park.
