Mountaineer Cross Country Gears-Up for PSAC Championship Meet Saturday

Sophomore Jess Scordino
MANSFIELD – The Mansfield University men's and women's cross country teams will vie for conference championships when they travel to Lock Haven University for the 2011 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) championship meet Saturday, Oct. 22.

Originally, Mansfield was slated to host the PSAC Championships on Oct. 22. However, due to the continuing rain affecting the Northeast and the location of the Lamb's Creek Cross Country Course within a designated flood zone, conference officials agreed to move the event to Lock Haven.

The championships kick-off with the women's 6K race at 10:45 followed by the men's 8K race at 11:30. Both events will be held at Lock Haven's West Branch Cross Country Course.

Coming into the season, the Mountaineer women's cross country team felt like they had something to prove. Four solid performances later, the Mounties find themselves ranked 3rd in the region and 21st in the nation and looking for more.

The women are led by senior Brenae Edwards who redshirted the 2010 season. Edwards, who finished 6th at the PSAC and Atlantic Regional meets in 2009, is one of the favorites in the field and will vie for an individual championship.

Sophomores Kristy Scordino and Jess Scordino continue to turn in solid times, finishing as the No. 2 and 3 for the Mounties in every race this season. The duo were Mansfield's top runners last season with Kristy turning in a 29th place finish at the 2010 PSAC meet with sister Jess placing 30th.

Freshman Susan Learn has been a welcome addition to the team, placing 7th and 41st in the first two meets before sitting out the last two races with injury. Learn will return for the conference meet Saturday.

Juniors Becky Kratz and Kait Chegwidden are talented runners who will look to score points for the Mounties. Kratz finished 32nd at the 2010 PSAC Championships.

The men are led by senior Kevin Cusworth who helped the Mounties to a 9th place team finish at last year's conference meet with a  48th place individual finish. Wes Winter and newcomer Will Mullen are both sophomores who continue to turn in top times for the Mounties. Winter finished 88th last year at the PSAC Championships.

Juniors Orion Bernard, Alex Beard, and Michael Robinson are all experienced runners who will look to improve upon last year's 9th place team finish.
