FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Women's soccer drops 2-1 heartbreaker to Shepherd in home opener

MANSFIELD – Erika Moyer scored her third goal of the season to give Mansfield an early lead but it won't hold up in a 2-1 setback in a non-conference matchup with Shepherd Wednesday afternoon.

Junior Kaitlyn McBride put the ball over the defender and Moyer, a sophomore forward, got behind the goalie and put the ball into the goal in the 15th minute to give Mansfield a 1-1 lead.

Twelve minutes later Shepherd (1-2) tied the game on a unassisted goal from Brianna Hines from 10 yards out.

Tied at 1-1 at halftime, Hines would scored again on a breakaway after taking a pass over the goalie from Rachael Dewberry in the 69th minute to score what would prove to be the winning goal.

Mansfield had its chances in the second half including a goal that was called off on a violation. The Mountaineers held a 15-9 shot advantage and 5-0 advantage in corner kicks but many of the shots were right on Shepherd goalie Elizabeth Wise who recorded eight saves on the afternoon. Alexis Wilhelm record six saves for Mansfield.

Moyer, McBride and Katelyn Smoker all had three shots for Mansfield.

Mansfield (1-1) suffered its first loss of the season while Shepherd (1-2) picked up its first win of the year.

The Mountaineers will host Gannon this Friday afternoon at 4 p.m.
