FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mansfield welcomes Army to Karl Van Norman Field for first time in school history – two historic programs to open CSFL season this Saturday as part of Mansfield's Family Day and Fabulous 1890s Weekend
MANSFIELD – The Mansfield University football team will add a chapter to its historic tradition when the Mountaineers welcome Army to Karl Van Norman Field for the first time in school history this Saturday, Sept. 25.
Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Karl Van Norman Field with the contest broadcast on a live stream by ESPN Radio Williamsport with Shane Wilber. The game will also be broadcast live by WNTE 89.5 FM in the Mansfield area. Live streaming of the ESPN broadcast and Live Stats are available at GoMounties.com.
Last season Mansfield and Army faced each other for the first time in history at the 2009 Allegiance Bowl in Saratoga Springs, NY.
The game is one of the highlights of Mansfield University Family Day celebration and of the Greater Mansfield Area's Fabulous 1890s Weekend celebrating Mansfield's place in football history for hosting the world's first night football game on Sept. 28, 1892.
The contest also marks the CSFL opening game for both teams. Mansfield lost a close 23-15 match-up against Cornell last Saturday while Army edged RPI 34-26. Mansfield plays Cornell twice during the season with only the second game counting in the CSFL standings.
The Mountaineers had a solid opening season performance against Cornell taking a 7-0 lead on senior Solomon Isom's 37-yard fumble return for a touchdown on the first play of the game. Mansfield added another score in the fourth quarter when senior Ben Anderton caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Kode Plank.
The offensive line of played progressively better as the game progressed helping the offense maintain drives. Desmen Johnson rushed for 41-yards on 17 carries while Plank led the passing attack connecting on 7-of10 passes for 75 yards including the touchdown pass to Anderton. Spencer La Mountain started the game at quarterback passing for 27 yards with Jason Winters rushing for 20 yards on four carries.
The defense played well for much of the game led by sophomore defensive end Paul Houseknecht who recorded a game high 14 tackles and Isom who was credited with 13 stops. Kevin Baker had 10 stops while Mansfield native Eli Morgan was in on five tackles. Freshman Troy Taylor had an impressive outing in his first collegiate game with six tackles and a pass breakup while junior Cody Corasdale also had six tackles. Justin DiMatteo recorded a sack while Anthony Mazzone returned an interception for 17-yards. David Wallace had three catches for 32 yards with freshman Pat Mackewicz catching two passes for 22 yards.
Army finished second in the CSFL last season with a 6-1 mark and returns some key weapons offensively. In the opener at RPI, sophomore quarterback Tim Meier passed for 307 yards and three touchdowns including a 95-yard strike to Ben Johnson in the fourth quarter. Meier completed 23-of-44 passes with three interceptions to match his three touchdowns. Johnson caught four passes for 156 yards and two touchdowns. Carlos Cook and Bryan Girouard led the defense with nine and eight tackles respectively.
