FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mountie women battle to 1-1 tie at Millersville on Smoker's late goal
MILLERSVILLE –
Katelyn Smoker scored with seven minutes left in regulation play to rally Mansfield to a 1-1 tie in double overtime at Millersville in a PSAC women's soccer contest Wednesday afternoon.
After both team battled to a scoreless tie at halftime, Millersville's Alexis Sutton scored off a corner kick in the 55th minute for the game's first goal.
Mansfield mounted pressure on the Millersville goal over the game's final 20 minutes with Smoker scoring what would prove to be the game-tying goal off an assist from
Kariann Breed sending a shot into the left side of the net late in the 82
nd minute.
Mansfield had a chance to score four minutes into overtime on a shot by Breed but it was stopped by Millersville goalie Kelsey Benson. Smoker got off another shot two minutes into the second overtime that went high and Erika Moyer's shot three minutes later went wide. The Mountaineers had one last try but Neele Hoerner's shot with less than two minutes to play was stopped by Millersville's Benson.
Millersville held a 14-11 shot advantage for the game, but Mansfield held a 8-5 advantage after the first half including a 4-1 advantage in the two overtime periods.
Sam DeLiere recorded three saves in goal for Mansfield while Benson had five saves for Millersville.
Mansfield host West Chester this Saturday.
