Mansfield Loses 1-0 in Tough Battle with Edinboro

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mansfield Loses 1-0 in Tough Battle with Edinboro.

Alexis Wilhelm
MANSFIELD – The Mansfield University women's soccer team lost a hard fought battle against visiting Edinboro University today. In the last home game for Mansfield, Mountaineer keeper Alexis Wilhelm played all 90 minutes in goal and had 8 saves on the day.

A tough defensive effort from both teams resulted in a low scoring affair in a make-up match originally scheduled for October 12th.

Sophomore goalie Alexis Wilhelm could not be beaten in the first half, having 4 saves and leading the Mounties into the half with a 0-0 tie. Also contributing to the first half shut out, was a strong defense led by Mansfield seniors Jackie Karlovich, Chelsea Bendert and Kelsey Gelina.

In the second half of play, Edinboro scored the first and what proved to be the only goal of the game when Karisa Fernandez gave a low cross to sophomore Jenna Madison who snuck the ball past the Mansfield keeper 10 yards out.

Unfortunately, the muddy condition of the field and a determined Edinboro defense prevented Mansfield from scoring an equalizer goal.

Mansfield goalie Samantha Deliere showed her passing abilities when she donned the #24 jersey and played in the field for the Mounties rather that her usual position between the sticks.

With this win, Edinboro improves to a record of 10 wins, 5 losses, and a tie. Mansfield falls to 1-12-2.

Mansfield women's soccer will play its final match of the season this Saturday, October 30 at 1pm when they travel to Kutztown to face the Golden Bears.
