Brittany Hansrote, a 2009 Mansfield University graduate and two-time All-American, enters her 11th season guiding the Mountaineer field hockey program in 2025.
Hansrote is the first Mansfield University alum to serve as head coach of the program.
Under coach Hansrote’s tenure, the team has accumulated nine All-Americans and earned 29 All-PSAC selections, including her two Coach of the Year titles.
In 2024, Hansrote and the program reached the PSAC postseason once again, becoming the first time in program history of back-to-back postseason berths. Under coach’s leadership, Jenna Duke became the program’s first Freshman of the Year. Kenedy Stroup and August Lewis repeated as NFHCA All-Americans, with Stroup being the team’s second consecutive First Team member. Stroup made All-PSAC First Team, while Lewis, Duke, and Melanie Esh all were Second Team members.
As a team, the group finished their second straight season of 10+ victories behind an upset victory at #2 Kutztown in part of a three game win streak to help secure their playoff spot. Lewis became the program's career wins leader after she earned her 33rd career victory versus Slippery Rock, also earning NFHCA DII National Defensive Player of the Week and the team remained ranked the entire season.
2023 is the highlight season for the field hockey program as Hansrote led the Mounties claimed their first playoff win in program history in the conference quarterfinals against Bloomsburg. This also served as the first ever home playoff game on Karl Van Norman when Mansfield won the 1-0 game in overtime. August Lewis, Hannah Meyer, and Kenedy Stroup were all named NFHCA All-Americans, the most for the program in a season, with Lewis being the first First Team member since 2019. Five members, the three mentioned before, Alex Esterling, and Kalin Duke made the All-PSAC Teams, with Lewis on First Team, Meyer and Stroup on Second Team, and Esterling and Duke making Third Team for the most also since 2019.
As a team, the group finished 12-7 on the year and a 5-4 conference record, including a shootout victory at Millersville on the final regular season day to clinch their first playoff berth since 2019. The team reached their highest ranking in program history at No. 6 after an upset over No. 2 Shippensburg, 2-0, appearing in the rankings every poll. Lewis broke the program record for shutouts (18) and single season shutouts (8). The team picked up four nationally ranked victories on the season including No. 9 Millersville, No. 4 and then No. 7 Bloomsburg, and No. 2 Shippensburg.
Hansrote led the Mountaineers to the National Rankings in 2022, reaching as high as No. 9 before finishing the season with an 8-10 overall and 4-7 PSAC record. Following the season, Meyer was named an NFHCA All-American defender after landing on the All-PSAC second-team. Esterling was named a Third Team forward.
After a COVID-19 cancelled season in 2020 and despite losing six contributing seniors and five All-Conference Athletes to graduation in 2019, Hansrote led the Mountaineers to a 9-9 overall record and 4-6 mark in the PSAC. Juniors Hannah Meyer (2nd-Team, Defense), Alex Esterling (2nd-Team, Forward) and Saramae Radel (3rd-Team, Midfielder) were honored on the all-conference roster following breakthrough second seasons with the Mounties.
In 2019, Hansrote led the Mounties to a 12-7 record, notching the first postseason berth since the 2010 season and the most wins since 2001. Hansrote earned her second PSAC Coach of the Year honor, while the Mountaineers reached No. 10 in the national poll. The Mounties ranked top-10 nationally in assists per game (seventh, 1.74), save percentage (fifth, .814), defensive saves (sixth, nine) and are tied for ninth in shutouts (six).
Brittany Ryan was named First-Team All-PSAC goalkeeper, forward Dana Evans and defender Madison Wilinsky were named to the 2nd Team and forward Larissa Motts and midfielder Meghan Griffin were named to the 3rd Team, marking the most all-conference selections by the Mounties since also earning five in 2012.
Ryan (1st Team) and Evans (2nd Team) are the fourth pair of teammates to be named to an All-American team and the first since Courtney Grunza '09 and Hansrote were named to first-team honors in 2009.
The Mountaineers placed four student-athletes on the All-PSAC list in 2018 in Madison Wilinsky (2nd Team), Brittany Ryan (2nd Team), Larissa Motts (3rd Team), and Meghan Griffin (3rd Team). Motts, Griffin, and Wilisnky were also tabbed 1st Team All-ECAC.
Following the 2017 season, Hansrote was named PSAC Coach of the Year in voting conducted by conference head coaches. The Mountaineers also landed three athletes on the All-PSAC teams in Meghan Griffin (2nd Team), Brittany Ryan (2nd Team), and Katie Lipski (3rd Team).
Hansrote coached sophomore goalkeeper Brittany Ryan to 1st Team NFHCA All-American, ECAC Defensive Player of the Year and 1st Team All-ECAC honors after a record-setting 2017 season. Ryan led the nation across Divisions I, II, and II in save pct. at .874 and ranked fourth in Division II in total saves with 173 (1st in PSAC). Ryan also earned the prestigious PSAC Top 10 Award for Fall 2017.
Mansfield was named the 2017 NCAA Division II Statistical Champion in team save percentage at .883 with Brittany Ryan earning individual NCAA Statistical Champion status with an .874 save percentage in goal.
Following the 2016 season, Katie Lipski was named to 3rd Team All-PSAC honors, the first all-conference honoree for Mansfield in three seasons.
Over her first three seasons at Mansfield, Hansrote took a program that did not win a game in 2015 to a team that won eight games in 2017 including a pair of victories over nationally ranked opponents (No. 5 Slippery Rock and No. 7 Bloomsburg). The 2018 team matched the win total from the previous season, marking the most wins for Mansfield in back-to-back seasons since 2006 and 2007.
In her first three seasons, Hansrote improved her team in every statistical category. From 2015 to 2017, Mansfield increase it goals from eight to 25, shots from 86 to 254, shots on goal from 52 to 129, and limited opponent goals from 82 to 25. The 25 opponent goals allowed was the fewest for a Mansfield team since the 1994 season.
In her first official recruiting class, Hansrote brought in 17 student-athletes before adding seven in the following recruiting cycle.
Hansrote came to Mansfield after a one-year stint as the head coach at Division III DeSales University where she led the Bulldogs to a school record 11 wins and just the third Freedom Conference playoff berth in program history. A record six players were named to the All-Freedom Conference Team following the 2014 season.
Before taking over the head job at DeSales, Hansrote served as the assistant field hockey coach at Kutztown University during the 2013 season under former Mountaineer Marci (Lippert) Scheuing ’05. Hansrote helped the Golden Bears to a seven win season in 2013 including three victories over nationally ranked opponents.
Hansrote came over to Kutztown with Scheuing from Division III Bryan Mawr College where she served as an assistant coach for one season. In 2012, the Owls recorded the most wins since 1998 and scored more goals than the previous six seasons combined. Bryn Mawr also placed two players on the All-Centennial Conference team for the first time in 13 years.
The Perkasie, Pa. native got her start in coaching in 2011 as an assistant with her alma mater of Pennridge High School. During her time at Pennridge, she directly assisted the head coach with all varsity practice and game duties and was in charge during all junior varsity practices and games.
Along with her success at the collegiate and high school levels, Hansrote also coached prospective college athletes at the club field hockey level. She guided the U-14, U-16 and U-19 Mystx Field Hockey Club teams out of Feasterville, Pa. from 2011-14 before leading the U-14 and U-19 teams for the United Field Hockey Club of Downingtown, Pa. starting in 2014.
As A Player (Brittany Kostishion)
Hansrote, formerly Brittany Kostishion, was a four-year starter at midfield for the Mountaineers from 2006-09 where she was a two-time All-American and three-time All-PSAC selection.
As a freshman she was a member of the Mountaineer’s first-ever PSAC playoff team that was edged 3-2 by undefeated and No. 1 ranked Bloomsburg in the opening round of the PSAC playoffs. The Mountaineers were ranked as high as No. 9 in Division II that season.
Hansrote started all 18 games during her sophomore season on a team that finished with 11 wins, the most since 2001. Following the season, she was named to 2nd Team All-PSAC honors. She was also a member of a team that participated in an international field hockey tour to Barbados in 2007.
As a junior, she again made starts in all 18 games, scoring two goals and recording an assist. Hansrote was tabbed 2nd Team NFHCA and womensfieldhockey.com All-American honors along with 2nd Team All-PSAC.
In her senior season, Hansrote scored six goals and dished out seven assists in 17 starts. She totaled 51 shots that season with 24 going on goal. The midfielder racked up 1st Team NFHCA All-American, 2nd Team womensfieldhockey.com All-American, 1st Team All-PSAC, All-ECAC Division II and Team MVP honors following the 2009 season. She also represented Mansfield in the 2009 Division II Senior All-Star Game.
Hansrote graduated from Mansfield in 2009 with a degree in business administration with a focus in travel and tourism. She also holds a level 1 certification from the USA Field Hockey Umpiring Academy.
Following graduation, Hansrote served as an intern at the 2009 BDO Junior Field Hockey World Cup in Boston.
She succeeded her former coach Diane Monkiewicz who directed the Mountaineers from 1998 until her retirement following the 2014 season.
Hansrote and her husband Nick, a 2010 graduate of Mansfield University and member of the Army Reserves, have three daughters, Bree, Berkeley, & Blake.
