CARY, N.C. – Mansfield topped Assumption 7-6 in game two of a doubleheader to earn a season-opening split at the USA Baseball Complex on Saturday.

The Mountaineers dropped the opener 7-1.

In game one, Mansfield (1-1, 0-0 PSAC) took the lead in the bottom of the first inning when
Owen Lukens knocked in
J.P. Bonanca on an RBI single to right field.
Â
Assumption (1-0, 0-0 NE-10) went on to score three runs in the top of the second and two more in both the sixth and seventh to earn the win.
Â
Mike Curtis tossed a complete game with five hits allowed and six strikeouts to pick up the victory on the mound.
Evan McAndrew took the loss for Mansfield.

In the second game, Assumption opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first inning. However, the Mountaineers responded in the bottom of the frame with Lukens and
Camren Ney driving in runs to give Mansfield a 2-1 edge.

The Mounties added another run in the bottom of the fourth when
Dio Infante took advantage of a defensive error to score unearned.

The Greyhounds evened the score at 3-3 in the next inning by producing a pair of runs.

Stepping into the box with bases loaded,
Colby Schearer tripled to the gap in right field to clear the bases and put the Mounties ahead 6-3.

Assumption rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh, but were unable to get a third as Mansfield held on for the win.

Tyler Guidos earned the win in relief, pitching the final 2.0 innings.
Edwin Lopez started on the bump for the Mounties, pitching 4.1 innings with three strikeouts.

Kyle Chudoba took the loss for the Greyhounds.

Mansfield squares off against Assumption for two more games on Sunday.
