MANSFIELD – Mansfield University baseball student-athlete Owen Lukens was honored as the 2017-18 recipient of the Steve McCloskey Service Award on Wednesday night at halftime of the men's basketball game at Decker Gymnasium.
 
Named in honor of longtime Mansfield Sports Information Director Steve McCloskey who retired last spring, the award is presented annually to a student who embodies the Mansfield University spirit and provides exemplary service to the athletic department. The inaugural award was presented last year to Michael Maniscalco.
 
Lukens is a redshirt senior and captain on the Mountaineer baseball team. The Williamsport, Pa. native has served internships with the Mansfield University Sports Information Department and Admissions Department, completed a semester long campaign for Partners in Progress, and worked to raise awareness for individuals with disabilities. Lukens was one of just four students selected from the Communication Department to work The Feast charity event in New York City.
 
"Owen is one of the most dedicated and passionate student-athletes I've had the pleasure to work with in my time at Mansfield," said Sports Information Director Ryan McNamara. "He is a perfect representation of what the McCloskey Award embodies and will be greatly missed when he graduates this spring."
 
Lukens earned Dean's List status this past fall and holds a cumulative 3.3 GPA. He will graduate with a degree in communications.
