Doc Fenton played right end for Mansfield State Normal School in 1905 and 1906. He was a member of the same team as Karl Van Norman and Harry Furman. Fenton was considered the team’s top defensive player, ran the ball and played right end. He also punted. In 1907 Fenton was recruited by Louisiana State where he played for the Tigers for three seasons. He led the team in scoring in 1907 at right end and played in the first football game on foreign soil when LSU defeated Havana University 56-0. In 1908 Fenton was moved to quarterback where he led the team to a perfect 10-0 season scoring 442 points while giving up 11. Selected to Karl Van Norman’s 50th Anniversary football team, Fenton was elected to the LSU Hall of Fame in 1971 and the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame in 1994, the only Mansfield player to be so honored.
