Mansfield Drops 3-2 Heartbreaker in Extra-Innings to End PSAC Title HopesQUAKERTOWN –
Kate Pratt and
Megan Miller each hit solo home runs and Mansfield was two outs from winning its first PSAC playoff game but Gannon rallied to tie the game in the seventh and scored the winning run with two outs in the ninth inning to eliminate the Mountaineers at the PSAC Championship Tournament in Quakertown Thursday.
Mansfield dropped the first game of the day 3-0 to top-seeded California.
Mansfield broke a scoreless tie when
Kate Pratt blasted a monster solo home run in the top of the fourth. It was Pratt's eighth home run of the season and 40th of her stellar career.
Gannon answered with a solo home run by Kiristie Colucci in the bottom the inning to knot the game at 1-1.
The Mountaineers retook the lead when
Megan Miller drilled a leadoff home run to open the fifth inning for a 2-1 advantage.
Mansfield threated again in sixth with runners on first and second with two outs when the game was delayed by 50 minutes on a lightning.
Senior
Emily Crandell, who started and went the distance in the longest stint of her career, retired the first batter in the bottom of the seventh before Rectenwald tied the score at 2-2 with a solo home sending the game into extra-innings.
Mansfield threated again in the eighth with
Stephanie Simmeth singled with one out followed by a single by Pratt. One out later, senior Kaitlyn singled but Simmeth was thrown out in a close play a the plate to end the inning.
The Mountaineers had a runner in scoring position again in the ninth when Miller led off with a single. Lauren Larson pinch ran and moved to second on a sacrifice and moved to third on a wild pitch but couldn't score.
Alexa Archbealt singled to lead off the ninth inning for Gannon and moved to second one out later on a wild pitch. She took third on a field's choice but with two outs Cortazzo dilled a ball into the gap to score the winning run.
Pratt and Miller each went 2-4 with a home run to lead the offense with Amanda also getting two hits. Crandell threw a gutty game, scattering nine hits and striking out four in going the distance.
Freshman Olivia Gumbita got the win striking out 11 and walking one.
Mansfield, which was 6th in the latest NCAA Atlantic Region rankings, will now wait to see if they are awarded an NCAA regional bid.
