FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Van Norman Field Artificial Turf and Lights Project Progresses on Schedule
MANSFIELD – The artificial turf and lights project at Mansfield University's Karl Van Norman Field is progressing on schedule in preparation for its debut set for Sept. 14 when Mountaineer field hockey hosts Shippensburg at 2 p.m. as the first official game on the turf before the sprint football team takes on Princeton under the lights at 7:30 p.m.
It marks the first-time in 121 years, since Mansfield hosted the world's first night football game on Sept. 28, 1892, that the Mountaineers will host a night football game.
Construction at Van Norman has moved rapidly with the removal of the natural turf, which was first installed when Van Norman Field opened in 1964, followed by the installation of an extensive drainage system. Several tons of different sized gravel was laid over the drainage system and leveled to form the base of the field.
Brand new yellow uprights have been installed in both endzones.
You can watch the progression of the construction project on live web cam available at the link above.
