Edwards and Scordino Look to Double-Up All-American Honors in 5,000 Saturday

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Edwards and Scordino Look to Repeat All-American Performances at NCAA Championship Saturday

MANSFIELD – Just 48 hours after running the greatest race of her life while becoming the first student-athlete in Mansfield University history to win a National Championship, Brenae Edwards, along with fellow All-American and teammate Jess Scordino, will attempt to repeat that magic when the duo competes in the 5,000 meters at the NCAA Division II Track and Field Championship in Pueblo, CO Saturday night.

Edwards and Scordino, who finished first and sixth in yesterday's 10,000 meters, will be part of a 24-runner field when the starting gun goes off at 10:05 p.m. (EDT) at the Neta and Eddie DeRose Thunderbowl in Pueblo. You can watch live streaming of the race at GoMounties.com.

The odds will be a little longer against the duo than was the case in the 10,000 meters. Edwards entered that race with the second-fastest time in the nation while Scordino was the seventh-seeded runner.

In the 5,000 meters, Edwards has the eighth best-time of the year (16:45.34) while Scordino was the final qualifier for the national championship run with a time of 16:59.42. Edwards finished second and Scordino third in the 5,000 meters at the PSAC Championship two weeks ago.

Alaska-Anchorage's Ruth Keino, who finished third and 56 seconds behind Edwards in yesterday's 10,000 meters, holds the fastest time coming into the race with a mark of 16:20.87.

Edwards is no stranger to excelling in the event in national championship competition. The graduate student earned All-American honors with a fifth place finish in the 5,000 at the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Championship and was third at that distance in the Indoor National Championship in 2010. She repeated as an All-American with a seventh-place showing in the 2011 National Indoor Championship.

A junior, Scordino is enjoying one of the best year's in school history earning All-American honors with a 24th place finish at the 2012 NCAA Division II Cross Country National Championship this Fall along with here All-American finish in the 10,000 meters yesterday.
