MANSFIELD – Soccer was a real kick in the grass Sunday afternoon at Smythe Park in Mansfield when the Mansfield University women's soccer team and the Tioga County Branch of the YMCA combined to offer a free youth soccer clinic.
The clinic, designed for ages 3-13, was hosted by the Mountaineer women's soccer team which took a break from its busy preseason camp schedule to spend two hours demonstrating basic skills to more than 70 eager to learn youngsters and their parents.
“It's a fun afternoon for the kids,” said head coach
Tim Dempsey. “I think our players remember how fun clinic were when they were that age and I know they understand that part of being a collegiate student-athlete is helping the community we live in become a better place for all of us.”
It marks the second clinic in five days the women's soccer team has offered to area youth soccer groups after hosting a clinic for more than 150 youth soccer players in Troy on Wednesday.
The clinic's provided hands-on instruction in various aspects of soccer along with six different skill session areas.
Mansfield opens the 2012 women's soccer season at Goldey-Beacom College on Sept. 1 before hosting East Stroudsburg in the home opener on Sept. 5.
