Mansfield women’s soccer and swimming teams participate in Relay For Life

MANSFIELD – The Mansfield University women's soccer and swimming team's participated in a campus-wide Relay for Life earlier this semester raising almost $1500 for the fight against cancer.

The Mansfield University Relay for Life is a 12-hour campus event where different teams walked around a path set in the Kelchner Fitness Center. In addition to walking, teams also set up booths selling merchandise where other participants or guests could visit. Some booths had food and other refreshments while others had activities such as games.

The women's soccer team raised more than $1,000 for the event.

“We mainly got donations from family and friends,” Relay Captain Amanda Quinn said. “The girls on the team sent emails and posted to Facebook asking for donations and we also held a bake sale during the relay itself.”

As important as it was the raise money, both teams also derived great benefit and reward from working together for a common cause.

“The greatest benefit for me is the reward in seeing college students coming together to raise money for a great cause, “explained Quinn.

“I've had two family members pass away from cancer and know some of my teammates have lost loved ones to cancer also. Doing something like Relay for Life gives us hope that one day there will be a cure.”

The women's swimming team also participated raising much of their money from selling homemade brownies, cupcakes and cups of candy.

“The greatest benefit for the team was to be able to be more involved on campus and help to support cancer research”, said Relay Team Captain junior Lindsey Gregg.
