MANSFIELD – Dr. Donald Shaw, Mansfield University's team physician for almost 30 years;
Alison Tagliaferri Class of 2006, Mansfield's all-time leading women's basketball scorer and softball standout; Randy Vargason Class of 1986, the 1985 PSAC North Player of the Year and PSAC Batting Champion and Charity (Learn) Walker Class of 2006, the first female All-American runner in school history, comprise the Mansfield University Athletic/Alumni Hall of Fame Class of 2011.
The foursome will be the 29th Class to enter the MU Athletic/Alumni Hall of Fame since its founding in 1983 when they are presented during induction ceremonies this Friday evening in North Manser Dining Room.
In addition to the induction ceremony on Friday, the Class of 2011 will also be honored in Saturday's Homecoming Parade as well as prior to Saturday's Navy vs. Mansfield football game at Karl Van Norman Field.
Charity (Learn) Walker, Class of Class of 2006 – Charity Learn was a four-year standout for the Mountaineer cross country, track and swimming programs. She was the first female runner in school history to earn All-American honors when she finished 33rd at the NCAA Division II National Cross Country Championship as a junior. A trailblazer for women's athletics, Learn was also the first women's PSAC individual champion when she won the steeplechase at the PSAC Outdoor Championship during her freshman season. Learn finished second overall in the 2002 PSAC Cross Country Championship which still remains the highest finish in school history. She was the first female runner to qualify and participate in the NCAA National Outdoor Championship, doing so twice in her career in the steeplechase and the 5,000 meters. A school-record five time selection for MU Female Athlete of the Year honors, Learn was also outstanding in the classroom earning Academic All-America honors and graduating with a cumulative 3.97 GPA.
Dr. Donald Shaw – Dr. Donald Shaw enters as Hall of Fame in the staff category. The long-time team doctor for thousands of Mountaineer student-athletes, Dr. Shaw has volunteered his services as MU's team doctor since 1982. He has been the attending physician at virtually every home football game the Mountaineers have played over the past 29 years in addition to his weekly visits to campus to diagnose and treat injured student-athletes.
Alison Tagliaferri, Class of 2006 – One of the most highly honored female athletes in school history, Tagliaferri was a four-year starter for the Mountaineer women's basketball and softball programs. She is the first and only MU women's basketball player to earn 1st Team All-PSAC East honors in each of her four seasons. As a senior in 2006, Tagliaferri became the first female Mountaineer to be named the PSAC East Player of the Year and earned All-American honors. A nine-time PSAC East Player of the Week selection, Tagliaferri is the leading scorer in Mountaineer history with 1,795 points. She also excelled on the softball field earning All-PSAC East honors three times. Tagliaferri is a four-time MU Female Athlete of the Year selection.
Randy Vargason, Class of 1986 – Vargason was a member of the Mountaineer baseball program from 1982-86. He was a three-time All-PSAC selection in the outfield and was the 1985 PSAC batting champion. Vargason was also a two-time All-Regional selection and earned 2nd Team All-American honors in 1986. In 1985, Vargason came off a medical-redshirt season to post a .466 batting average. He followed that up with a .453 batting average in 1986. Vargason's .434 career batting average ranks second in school history and third best in PSAC history. He still ranks third in career stolen bases (56), 7th in triples (10) and 11th in home runs (22). The 1985 PSAC North Player of the Year, Vargason was the MU Spring Athlete of the Year in both 1985 and 1986.
